Sheraton AMS Schiphol Airport

Sheraton Schiphol Airport review: Couldn’t see the airplanes, but at least I slept well

The following is a full review of my experience at the Sheraton Amsterdam airport (AMS). Your courage to seek out (and read) a detailed review of what is essentially a run of the mill airport hotel will be rewarded. I’ll do my best to keep it entertaining.

For those of you who are having second thoughts about how you’ve chosen to spend the next 5 minutes of your life, the TLDR is this: it’s a good hotel in a good location. The beds are cootie-free and there’s a very low chance of getting murdered in your sleep. Go for it!

A full review of my one night stay at the Sheraton Hotel Amsterdam Schiphol Airport

There are a lot of good hotels located adjacent to Schiphol Airport. I chose the Sheraton for the simple fact that it looked to be the closest.

Location

The Sheraton AMS is located directly across from Terminal 2. It is attached to the airport via a covered walkway, and you won’t have to walk far (it’ll take about 10 minutes).

Getting to it from the outside is very fast and easy as well. Just follow the signs. Good luck avoiding speeding taxis and buses.

There she is. That’s the Sheraton, as seen immediately after stepping outside of Terminal 2. Those of you feeling not so adventurous (and too lazy to go outside) will be rewarded immensely by scrolling down to the next pic…
See? There’s actually a tunnel leading to the Sheraton from inside the airport. It pays to be lazy and boring sometimes!

“Maybe it would’ve been faster if I went outside. Probably more exciting too.”

The fact that there was nobody here at the main entrance berating me for being so lazy (and dull) was highly appreciated. Five-star experience so far.

The lobby (and checking in)

Finding the lobby when coming from inside the airport will be easy. The walkway leading you to the main entrance is the same level that the lobby is in.

Coming from the outside? Take the elevator to level 3. The kicker is that it won’t be obvious that you’re on the lobby level until you walk around to the backside of the elevators. It’s a confusing maze inside.

The reception desk (with what appears to be a a businessman getting ready to be reminded of how lazy and boring he is by the front desk staff).

Checking in was fast and easy. I highly recommend checking in via the Marriott Bonvoy app though. It’ll be a lot faster, as you can skip the line altogether.

Restaurants

The main restaurant is located on the lobby level. It looked good, but I didn’t try it due to the fact that there are a wide variety of shops and restaurants located over in the terminal building that are within easy walking distance.

The lobby restaurant looks pretty good actually. I didn’t have the opportunity to try it out, but I’m assuming it’s good considering the lack of “I had diarrhea for a week afterwards” reviews anywhere online.
Sheraton Schiphol Airport restaurant and bar levels
This is a multilevel lobby, so you’re gonna have to go up one level to the bar / lounge if you feel the need to impress the hotel staff with your alcohol tolerance. “See that?? I’m not as *hiccup* bor…boring as you say I aaam…ma’am!”

Getting to my room

Those of you who are even the slightest bit afraid of heights probably aren’t going to like the glass elevator. I personally don’t think it’s anywhere near as scary as the elevator in the Frankfurt Airport Hilton, but it’s a doozy nonetheless.

Assumption: It’s gonna be a bit of a bland elevator ride up to the 6th floor.

Reality: It was kind of an exciting (and scenic) elevator ride up to the 6th floor.

Room 623 is mine for the night. Fingers crossed that it (and the view) isn’t anywhere near as boring as I am…

Room overview

I paid extra for a high-floor airport facing room. All I’m going to say is this: the room was a lot nicer than the view (which I’ll show you in a moment).

Sheraton Hotel Schiphol Airport room
This is a really good looking room IMHO. Not boring!
Sheraton Hotel Schiphol Airport king bed
A King bed fit for a King mega-nerdy (and boring) hotel reviewer from the US.
Sheraton Hotel Schiphol Airport bed size and thickness
Considering how jetlagged I was, I can neither confirm nor deny that I was whispering “ooh baby” to myself as I was taking this pic of the bed. She hawt.
Sheraton Hotel Schiphol Airport blackout drapes
It’s worth noting that it was about 1 PM when I took these pics, so the blinds to a really good job of blocking out the light. I reckon it would be real easy to sleep like the dead in here (24/7) oversleep and miss your flight.
Sheraton Hotel Schiphol Airport in room desk and couch
This table doesn’t look like a very comfortable place to work, but the couch looks like a pretty good place to set up camp if your travel companion won’t stop farting in their sleep.
Sheraton Hotel Schiphol Airport electrical outlets and USB charging ports
The plug situation. One, Euro-style electrical outlet, two USB-A ports, and the connector that is in every hotel room everywhere in the world that nobody ever uses. WTF is that anyway?
Sheraton Hotel Schiphol Airport pillows on the bed
Sheraton AMS: pillow fight friendly. It kinda looks like they even encourage it actually.
Sheraton Hotel Schiphol Airport in-room refillable water bottle
Pro: there are really nice water bottles in the room. Con: you have to fill them with tap water (at your own risk).

The view

I loves me a hotel room with a good view of a busy airport. That’s exactly what I got here that the AMS Sheraton. The problem is that the hotel is so far away from the terminals (and the runways) that it makes plane spotting difficult. I guess you can kinda see the airplanes. Sort of.

Airport facing view from my room at the Sheraton Hotel Schiphol Airport
OK, yeah, this is technically a view of the airport. All I’m saying is that I was kind of expecting (hoping / wishing) for a view similar to the one that I had from my room at the Calgary Airport Marriott.

It wasn’t a total disaster however. There were plenty of cars to watch.

The excitement of watching yet another black Peugeot drive by.

The good news is that some rooms have better views of the airport (and airplanes) than others. I stayed at this hotel again two days later, and here’s the view that I had from my room in the other wing:

The bathroom

Fun fact: I wrote this review approximately six weeks after my stay. I didn’t have easy access to the pictures of the bathroom as I was writing it, and you know what? I couldn’t even remember what the damn thing looked liked.

It was forgettable – but at least it wasn’t terrible (because otherwise I would’ve remembered it).

Let’s go to the bathroom!
Sheraton Hotel Schiphol Airport bathroom vanity mirror with light
A vanity mirror with a ring light? I can dig it.
Sheraton Hotel Schiphol Airport bathroom toilet
I like how they think that I’ll be able to reach the spare roll of toilet paper in an emergency. It’s a nice toilet though!
Sheraton Hotel Schiphol Airport bathroom shower
The cookies and cream shower is pretty nice too. Remember though, this is Europe, and there are no shower doors, and you’ll freeze because there’s nothing to stop the cold air from getting in. Prepare for shrinkage.
Sheraton Hotel Schiphol Airport bathrobe
The bathrobe situation is pretty good IMHO. It’ll be perfect for helping you to get cozy do you watch all the Peugeots roll by…

Pros and cons

The Sheraton at Schiphol Airport is a pretty good airport hotel. It’s not amazing, but it’s a lot nicer than many others that I’ve stayed in (especially the Sheraton at the Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris).

Pros

  • Very conveniently located. Best of all, you’re not going to have to go outside to reach it.
  • It’s an extremely quiet property. You’re not going to be kept up all night by the sound of airplanes taking off and landing.
  • Everything is very clean and well-maintained. It looks like a brand new build (even though it’s not).

Cons

  • The views of the terminals and runways from the airport facing rooms are just okay. I’ve had better.
  • The lobby, lounges, and restaurants are all on separate levels (and it’s not all that easy to move between them).
