Marriott Newark Airport

Marriott Newark Airport review: Probably not the most exciting hotel you’ll ever stay at, but it is convenient

If you’ve stayed at any airport Marriott hotel in the US in the past three years, you’ve already stayed at the one at Newark Airport. It exactly what you think it is. There will be no surprises.

There could be some disappointment though. Despite being located so close to the airport, it’s darn near impossible to walk to. You can certainly try, but you will die.

Despite not being attached directly to the airport, this Marriott is the most convenient hotel for anyone needing a place to stay immediately after or before a long flight at EWR. It’s certainly not the nicest (or the most luxurious), but it is the most convenient.

Location

The Marriott at EWR is located directly across from the airport. Although you’ll be able to see it from all terminals, there are no sidewalks or walkways leading to it. You will have to take a shuttle bus. Thankfully the shuttle bus is free, very frequent, and very easy to find from the baggage claim level. Just follow the signs.

Life is good when there are lots of signs leading you to the hotel shuttle bus. It’s not always this easy!

I was so tempted to ask him for a high five (in celebration of how easy it was to find the bus stop), but it looked as if he was too busy stewing over the fact that the shuttle bus isn’t here right now.

Silently judging the roadsmanship of the driver as we make our way over to the hotel. He did pretty OK.

This is a picture of the exterior from the following morning (as I was waiting for the shuttle bus back to the airport). $20 says this looks exactly how you imagined it to look like in your mind. Amirite?

The lobby (and checking in)

Not gonna lie. The lobby of this hotel is very dark and not all that inviting. Perhaps it was because I arrived at 11 PM, but it didn’t seem to be all that cheery of a place that time of night.

I’m so ready for this! The question is: are they ready for me?

I’ve never stayed at a hotel deep in rural Russia, but I’d imagine that the lobbies of those kinds of hotels look a lot like this. This is a lot darker (and more Russian) than I was expecting.

There was a line of people waiting to check in when I arrived. Because I had already checked in online, I was able to bypass all that congestion at the reception desk. Planning ahead FTMFW.

How do you say “The reception desk was busy (but not that exciting)” in Russian? If you’re as unsure as I am, just read that in a deep Russian accent. It has the same effect.

Snacks! In the lobby! And they were expensive AF! But I didn’t mind! Because it was convenient!

And delicious. Looks like somebody made a meal out of those Tate’s cookies.

Getting to my room

The elevators are located fairly deeply in the lobby, and it took me a bit of walking around to find them. This is a big hotel, so be prepared to do a lot of walking once inside. It took me about 10 minutes from the time that I entered until the moment that I reached the door to my room. I don’t think I’ve done this much walking inside a hotel since that one time at the Dulles Airport Marriott.

At least I’m not seeing a trail of cookie crumbs leading to the elevators. They keep this place pretty clean.

Not a bad looking hallway. Seems as if we have left Russia and are now entering Scandinavia (the part where IKEA was invented).

Room 738 is mine for the night. And thank god it’s not a “no meatballs” sign.

Room overview

I was expecting the worst considering that I had booked the cheapest room they had available. I was mentally prepared for it (whatever it may be) as I opened the door for the first time. You can imagine how relieved I felt what I saw not only how large the room was, but how nice it was as well. It even smelled fresh and clean.

“Ta daaa!” I’m not sure what it is I’m showing you here (because I completely forgot why I took this picture), but…just look at that floor tile.

I know exactly why I took this picture. The Marriott pen over there on the bedside table was something else!

And yeah, the room is pretty nice too. Big bed. Equally big couch. It’s like a suite (but not).

It’s like a bed (but not). In all honesty, this couch probably would’ve been more comfortable due to how soft the mattress on the bed was.

I especially like how they decided to go with a “Tate’s Cookies” color palette. This was in no doubt their best defense against the inevitable crumbs.

Soft mattress or not, you know it’s a good bed when it photo bombs pretty much every pic in the review. It’s beefy.

$20 says that the hotel maid who stacked these pillows also stacks rocks at the beach (for fun) on her days off. She’s pretty good at this!
Marriott Newark Airport dresser drawers and shelving for storage
Although there is no standalone desk in this room, there is plenty of storage space. You weren’t planning on doing any work anyway (be honest).

What’s in the drawer you ask? Two reminders of how much of a lowlife sinner you are, that’s all.

But how much sinning can one really do with only a coffee machine (and no minibar)?

The closet. Nothing ever exciting happens in the closet, so let’s move on…

The view

Not only did I have a pretty nice view of the airport from my room, I also had a very nice view of the New York City skyline. I couldn’t see many airplanes (they were too far away), but seeing the city off in the distance was pretty cool.

What a view! Frank Sinatra would approve of my room selection I think.

The bathroom

The bathrooms in airport Marriott hotels can be a hit or a miss, but this one was a hit. A big one! It was clean, very well designed, and bright. No complaints from me.

This is what your travel companion is going to see just moments after telling you to “hold that thought” (because they needed to take a dump).

Not a bad looking shower, eh? It’s definitely not party size, but it’ll do the job (of washing away your sins) nicely.

Clean, refreshed, and (most importantly) sin free!

The lobby restaurant

If you’re not feeling Baller enough to order room service, you’ll be happy to know that there’s a pretty good restaurant located in the lobby. I ate breakfast there, and it was decent. Certainly cheaper than room service would have been.

“OK” as in “okay, I probably could’ve found a better breakfast inside the airport if I had a bit more patience.”

Pros and cons

Overall, my experience at this hotel was pretty good. The trick is not to expect too much I think. Not only isn’t a Marriott, it’s an airport Marriott. An airport Marriott associated with maybe not one of the best airports in the US. Set your expectations appropriately and you’ll have a pretty good time.

Pros

  • It’s located very close to the airport.
  • The free shuttle bus is very frequent.
  • It’s one of the cleanest airport Marriott hotels that I’ve ever stayed at.
  • The rooms seem to be recently renovated. They look nice!

Cons

  • Although it’s located so close to the airport, good luck walking to it. You will get hit by a cement truck. Or two.
  • It’s a big property. This might be a problem if you’ve got a lot of luggage (and ornery travel companions) in tow.
  • There is food available on site, but it’s not the best quality stuff.
